Nasopharyngeal Airway
The Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA) is an airway management device that is inserted through the nose into the nasopharynx to prevent upper airway obstruction and helps maintain safe breathing. It maintains a patent airway in situations such as when the tongue falls back or when oral structures obstruct the airway. It is the most effective alternative, simple airway solution in situations where the oral route cannot be used (oral trauma, jaw lock, intraoral masses, dental/facial injuries). Because it can also be used in semi-conscious patients with a gag reflex, it is indispensable in tactical medicine, PHTLS, ambulance, and emergency medicine.
